Real authors do not use generative AI to write books. Novels written by AI are not real books.
One of the many reasons most authors don’t like generative AI is that it was trained with our pirated books. Pirating books is bad, you guys. Stealing is bad. Libraries exist, and should be used.
I cannot believe any of these are controversial statements. But believe me, I’ll get some emails calling me not-nice names. This timeline sure is wild.
And in this wild timeline, I’m here to assure you that I’m a real live girl. Zero percent of my books are written, edited, augmented, or “enriched” by AI. None of my cover designers use AI artwork.
The same goes for anything I write anywhere, including here. And if this website looks like it’s homemade, that’s because it is. I use WordPress, so I’ve had to write very little actual CSS, and thank heavens for that. But every block, page, and post was, lovingly if somewhat amateurishly, designed and put together by me. The storyrook you see throughout the site has been with me for over a decade, since it was hand drawn by my sister-in-law, Christine Rasmussen. On paper! And then scanned in!
A lot of people are finding AI useful for all sorts of things. I myself ask Siri questions all the time. (My Siri voice is a British male, so I pretend he’s my old-timey butler.) But generative AI has no place in creative work. Art is the most human thing there is, unless you count actual humans.
I said what I said.
